How to become a Truck Driver in New Zealand

Thinking about getting behind the wheel of a big rig? Whether you’re starting fresh or looking for a new career path, becoming a licensed Truck Driver in New Zealand is a solid move. Here's what you need to know to get started.

Step 1: Hold a Full Class 1 Licence

Before you can start the process, you’ll need to have your full Class 1 (car) licence. You must have held it for at least 6 months before you can progress to a Class 2 licence.

Step 2: Choose the Right Truck Licence

There are four heavy vehicle licence classes in New Zealand:

  • Class 2: Medium rigid vehicles
  • Class 3: Medium combination vehicles (rarely used)
  • Class 4: Heavy rigid vehicles
  • Class 5: Heavy combination vehicles

Most drivers start with Class 2 and work their way up as they gain experience.

Step 3: Book a Training Course

To get a Class 2, 4, or 5 licence, you need to complete a theory and practical course from an NZTA-approved training provider. These are known as Unit Standard (US) 17574 courses and are a faster alternative to sitting tests at a licensing agent.

Good training courses cover the essentials — road rules, logbook use, vehicle checks, and how to drive safely under pressure.

Step 4: Apply for Your New Licence Class

Once you’ve passed your course, take your certificate to a driver licensing agent (like VTNZ or AA) and apply for the upgraded licence class. You’ll need to provide ID, pay the fee, and have your photo taken.
